Microneedling

Microneedling

  • Microneedling is a non-invasive procedure using sterile fine suture grade needles of varying lengths to create controlled micro-injuries (tiny punctures) in the skin.
  • These micro-channels will allow topical gels, creams, and Growth factors to be absorbed more effectively, enhancing the effects in deeper layers of the skin.
  • This technique affects the outermost layer of the skin, and stimulates the skin’s natural healing process, producing collagen and elastin.
  • The skin’s repair process, with its enhanced collagen and elastin production, can help smooth lines, reduce wrinkles, even skin tone, refine pores, tighten skin, and improve the appearance of scars, including acne scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, damaged or ageing skin, and even out skin texture (refine pores), resulting in a smoother and more even complexion.
  • The procedure can also help people with Alopecia by stimulating Hair Growth

Most people may need multiple (3) treatments over several months to achieve their desired results.

Targeted Areas

Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can be used on various body parts. The procedure is effective on the face, including sensitive areas such as the lower eyelids, neck, and décolleté. It can also be applied to all body parts, including hands, arms, abdomen, back, legs, thighs, and knees. Each area can be treated to address specific skin concerns, such as texture irregularities, scars, or signs of aging, and hyperpigmentation with the treatment tailored to the targeted zone’s sensitivity and needs.

The procedure can also help people with Alopecia by stimulating Hair Growth:

Microneedling and microdermabrasion are procedures that improve the look and texture of your skin. However, microdermabrasion doesn’t use needles. Instead, a healthcare provider uses a device with a rough edge, like sandpaper, to exfoliate the uppermost layer of your skin. Microneedling goes deeper into your skin than microdermabrasion, so it might work better for problems beneath the surface, such as acne scars.

Microneedling has cosmetic and medical uses. You might consider micro-needling if you’re
concerned about:

  • Enlarged pores.
  • Fine lines or wrinkles.
  • Loose or crepey (thin and wrinkled) skin.
  • Mild scars, especially those from acne or burns.
  • Skin discoloration(hyperpigmentation) or uneven skin tone.
  • Stretch marks.
  • Hair growth for alopecia

Talk to your healthcare provider before getting microneedling if you have:

  • Acne or are taking medication for acne.
  • Blood disorders or are on anticoagulants (drugs that prevent blood clots).
  • Cancer and are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • Frequent skin rashes (contact dermatitis) or cold sores.
  • Keloidal tendency (your skin forms hard, raised scars).
  • Moles, freckles, skin tags or other growths that change in size, shape, or bleed.
  • Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Procedure Details

Before microneedling, you have a consultation with a healthcare provider. Make sure that whoever does the procedure has experience in this technique. Your healthcare provider will examine your skin, review your health history, and discuss your goals for the procedure. Then, the provider will review the Consent Form with you to ensure you answer any questions. They will also take high-resolution photos of the area so you can compare your skin before and after microneedling sessions.

This is a good time to ask any questions you may have about microneedling, such as:

    • Are there risks or side effects?
    • Does microneedling hurt?
    • How soon will I see the results?
    • Is there downtime after the procedure?
    • Will I need more than one treatment?
    • Your healthcare provider may ask you to apply vitamin A or C cream to your skin about a month before treatment. These creams can help start the process of collagen production.

  • Your healthcare provider cleans your skin and applies a numbing cream or ointment, such as lidocaine cream/gel 5%. They do this 20 to 30 minutes before your procedure so the lidocaine has time to work. Then, the lidocaine is removed, and the skin is disinfected with 70% alcohol.
  • Next, your healthcare provider uses a hand-held roller or an electric tool to make the wounds in your skin. The roller has tiny sterile suture-quality needles. Your healthcare provider rolls it slowly and gently across your skin. If they use the electric device, needles pulse up and down to puncture your skin. They can change the length of the needles on the electric device. Longer needles go deeper into your skin, which might be necessary if you have deep scars or pockmarks from acne. Needle lengths can range from 0.5 millimetres to 2 millimetres.
  • You may feel warmth or a scratching sensation on your face once microneedling begins. Some people may experience discomfort if the needles are close to bony areas, such as the forehead, cheekbones, and upper lip. During the session, the practitioner will adjust the needle length to achieve "pinpoint bleeding," which stimulates fibroblast cells in your body to release collagen type 1.

Depending on the size of the area to be treated, a microneedling procedure can take 15 minutes to a few hours.

Risks / Benefits of microneedling

Benefits

Considered relatively safe with no significant side effects, micro-needling is suitable for all skin tones and is particularly ideal for individuals with darker skin tones. Microneedling can enhance the appearance and texture of your skin. It can also reduce the visibility of stretch marks, scars, wrinkles, and other skin concerns. Unlike some facial rejuvenation procedures that employ heat, light, or lasers, micro-needling doesn’t pose a risk of skin discoloration.

 Risks

Microneedling is a safe procedure, but risks may include:

  • Bruising
  • Scarring
  • Skin infection

Post-Treatment Expectations

  • Microneedling is an outpatient procedure, so you can go home once it’s done.
  • After your Microneedling session, you may experience mild redness and sensitivity, similar to a sunburn, which typically subsides within 24-48 hours.
  • Most people can wear makeup the day after the procedure, but they should stay out of the sun until their skin heals.
  • Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun after treatment, so you must avoid direct UV exposure and wear Mineral sunscreen (containing titanium and zinc oxide) before going outside.
  • In the days and weeks after microneedling, you might notice that your skin burns or feels tight. Some people also have dry, flaking skin that improves with moisturizer, hence the importance of Home Care treatments.
  • A week after your first treatment, you should notice an immediate “glow” and a difference in your skin texture.
  • Over the following weeks, visible changes to the skin develop over several weeks. You will notice gradual improvements in your skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance as new collagen and elastin are produced. Most people require several microneedling treatments, typically every 3 to 6 weeks apart. It can take 3 months to 6 months to see results. Afterward, you might need the procedure once a year for maintenance.
  • Results can continue to improve for up to six months following treatment. After three treatments, most patients observe a significant reduction in pore size and an enhancement in acne scars or deeper skin texture wrinkles. To maintain micro-needling results, individuals with younger skin require maintenance every 6 to 12 months, while patients over 40 and those with heavily sun-damaged skin need touch-ups every 3 to 4 months.
