Phototherapy / Photobiomodulation

Phototherapy / Photobiomodulation

  • Phototherapy, meaning ‘Treatment with Light’ applies a low-level light energy exposing the skin to stimulate or regulate biological process with proven therapeutic effects (photo biomodulation).
  • Phototherapy is well known for its regenerative and anti-inflammatory benefits without creating trauma, making it safe and suitable for all skin types.
  • Specific wavelengths interact with biological systems and activate key cell receptors which consequently trigger a transfer of light energy to cellular energy. Energised skin cells function better and can renew faster promoting healthy, youthful, and radiant skin.
  • LED Phototherapy offers a new alternative compared to more aggressive procedures reducing higher risk of adverse response, discomfort and downtime. The energy delivered through a wavelength stimulate the self-repair mechanism of the skin, and restores skin conditions and function.
  • Today Phototherapy is recognised as an essential modality for skin care, as it is safe and effective for the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory and problematic skin conditions (wound healing, ageing skin).

Phototherapy FAQ

The multi-purpose Dermalux Flex MD is an effective treatment for skin concerns like acne, redness, pigmentation, signs of aging, scarring, large pores, and uneven tone. Unlike other treatments, it doesn’t contain any harmful wavelengths or UV rays meaning there’s no damage to the skin. Non-invasive, safe and effective, there’s no risk of injury or downtime afterwards and it can also be used by all skin tones and types.

Flex MD contains a combination of 360 lights in blue, red and near-infrared shades, all of which command very different cellular actions to the damaging wavelengths of UV light – in fact, they’re wholly good for the skin.
Each light works to stimulate the skin’s cellular functions and helps repair the skin. The wavelengths are absorbed by the targets in the cells, then put to use enacting a variety of benefits.
Blue is the most superficial shade. It has an antibacterial action, working to degrade the acnes bacteria in the epidermis layer, thus preventing breakouts from forming. Red is delivered to the dermis to boost cell renewal, prompting the production of collagen and elastin in the process. Think of it as an energy boost for tired cells. And near-infrared travels all the way to the subcutaneous layer, where it increases circulation, enhancing the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells.

Yes, it is safe and anyone can have this treatment unless you have a condition that makes you light sensitive.
Everyone can benefit from LED light therapy. LED’s emit a low-level light energy that will not burn or irritate the skin. It is suitable for all skin types and age groups. There is also no risk of unwanted side effects or downtime, which is often seen with more invasive procedures.
The technology of LED Light therapy is over 100 years old. It has been shown in independent clinical research to deliver powerful therapeutic benefits to living tissue. It is medically recognized and has approval to treat for a wide range of skin concerns. LED light is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful skincare treatments.

Following a Flex MD treatment, there are some immediate visible changes in the skin but most changes occur naturally over a series of treatments. Results may continue to improve up to 4-6 weeks after a course as LED Phototherapy continues to stimulate the natural cellular processes to rejuvenate and improve the quality of the skin.

For optimum results, we advise 4 to 6 Flex MD treatments, depending on the skin condition.
Treatment results are cumulative, and sessions taken in close succession are generally recommended.
The number of treatments required to achieve optimum results may be subject to a number of factors which should be discussed during the consultation to manage client expectations.
These include age, skin type, severity of indication, lifestyle factors and other procedures that may be included in the overall treatment programme.
COURSE RECOMMENDATION:
6-12 treatments are generally recommended for all indications at a frequency of 2 sessions per week. Patients should be reviewed at the end of the course to assess progress and further treatments may then be advised as required.
TREATMENT FREQUENCY:
A 24-hour time period between treatments is generally recommended for inflammatory conditions such as acne, redness and sensitive skin, however for general skin rejuvenation, treatments can be taken in daily succession.
COURSE FREQUENCY:
Due to cell activation, results can last for several weeks following a course of treatments. However, regular maintenance treatments are advised to extend your patients’ results as part of an on-going skin health program.

Integrating Phototherapy with other skin treatments

Phototherapy can be combined with a wide range of procedures including skin peels, microdermabrasion, Microneedling, mesotherapy, PRP, Radio Frequency, Laser/IPL and injectable treatments. It will also enhance the results of more traditional facial treatments.

It is particularly effective with resurfacing procedures where superficial layers of the stratum corneum are removed. Dead skin cells create an uneven surface which increases the reflection of light. Creating a smooth and more homogenous surface allows light to pass through the protective barrier of the epidermis.

Applying topical products to the skin prior to the Phototherapy treatment offers a number of key benefits:

  • Near Infrared 830nm can enhance cell permeability which aids product penetration whilst
  • Red 633nm is proven to increase cell metabolism which can accelerate activation of ingredients.
  • The skin is not totally smooth and dead skin cells create an uneven surface which increases the reflection of light. Topical serums help to create a more homogenous skin surface that allows for more even and enhanced light absorption.
